Mortal Gods: Creating a Character from Concept to Sculpt

Phatis here again. On a Monday of all things.

I hate Mondays, they’re dreadful things. In my day we didn’t have Mondays. The world was a much happier place back then, except maybe for all the disease, war, famine, and poverty and, … you know what? It was still better than having Mondays.

There I go, prattling on. Anyway, the tyrants over at War Banner have once again been slow to bring me a coffee. I’m starting to think that maybe they don’t drink it, given the rarity in which they fill me a cup.

Seeing that I am in such a curmudgeonly and uncaffeinated mood, I have decided to sneak out some information to you. It’s all very hush hush, so it seems like it’s your lucky day!

Right. So what do you say to seeing the step-by-step process involved with creating a heroic character for Mortal Gods? What? Oh yes, I know it’s dangerous business leaking this to you. But honestly, what can War Banner do to me? I’m already a shade, after all. Muahahaha! *cough, wheeze, hack* Ugh, Mondays.

The first step to any good character is in his or her design. The crew comes up with a concept, vets it historically, verifies that it’s a cool idea, see if it plays well, and then pushes on to the design phase.

Let’s say they want to create a basic promachos (heroic champion) character. They explain how they want the figure to look and then the very talented Steve Beckett sketches out the rough drawing (I say rough, but it’s better than anything my contemporaries in Athens ever came up with). Steve comes back with something beautiful like this:

Impressive, right?! At this point the image is approved (I mean, who wouldn’t approve that piece of art?) and it goes into a second phase.

At this point the sketch is also handed over to sculptor and magician Stavros Zouliatis, who then takes the drawing and turns it into a sculpted masterpiece. Meanwhile Steve takes the original sketch and inks it for the final artwork. Here is the results of Stage 2 (note the sculpt is the same scale as the Victrix Miniatures plastics):

You can now see why I believe Stavros is a wielder of the magical arts! Here is an insert of the sculpt next to the original sketch:

It’s an iconic pose, to be sure.

Steve’s inked artwork is to then added to the character recruitment card which will be a large part of the game–I am sure that is a topic to be discussed in a future post. Until then, definitely check out this work-in-progress recruitment card:

Here we are, my living friends! Clever shade that I am, I might be able to bring a few more of these top secret bits to your attention prior to release. It all depends on whether or not I get my coffee with lots of sugar and cream, of course. Come to think of it, we didn’t have much in the way of those sweet things back when I was alive. Hmm. I would rather like the 21st century, if only someone could get rid of Mondays.

That’s all for now. Going to scare some interns, I think. I recall a story told of ghosts who rattle chains and such to spook out the occupants of a house and it sounds like it might just be the sort of thing that wakes me up.
